PROGRAMMER’S PREFACE

Here’s a reasonably cool, lowest common denominator, multi-platform digital version of Jack Herer’s underground classic.

This content-rich CD-ROM includes all of the source materials you need to create school reports, papers, videos, or web pages on the uses and history of hemp or to demonstrate to skeptics the documented utility of this remarkable plant.

Everybody with almost any kind of computer can use their web browser (or movie player) to view four QuickTime movies, including Jack Herer’s music video “Jack Rap” and the U.S.D.A.’s 1942 film “Hemp for Victory”.

Readers can keep browsing on through the text from the 11th edition of Jack’s best-selling book, illustrated with samples of pictures from all eleven editions of the book, plus bunches of cool new artwork.

And the CD-ROM includes other cool nuggets scattered around as surprises for truely interested hempsters.

Check into Jack’s web site (http://www.jackherer.com) to help build a way cool LINUX/Macintosh presentation.

PROGRAMMER’S PREFACE

for version 1.2

As you can tell by the copyright dates, Bill Turner and I started work on this project before Jack wrote the first edition of his book.

More than a decade ago Bill asked the intriguing question of “what would you do if you had more than half a gigabyte to take advantage of the Macintosh’s built-in sound and graphics?”

Through many long nights of getting high and trading ideas we came up with many of the basic approaches to interactive multi-media developed independently elsewhere, as well as many ideas still unimplemented anywhere.

When Stephen suggested putting together our ideas with Jack’s book, well, it was like a dream come true.

Although a serious lack of equipment (much of this work was done on an old black and white Mac 512K and a couple of Mac Pluses) prevented us from including many of our ideas about interactive multi-media or the flashy animations and videos of many multi-media projects, we were still able to create a disk that faithfully tells the important truths about hemp.

It was rather rough in the beginning, with things like artists quitting and having to retype the entire text of Jack’s book because we couldn’t afford a copy of Quark -- not to mention having to write a clone of Director because we couldn’t afford that either (which turned out for the good because our Custom Macintosh Reader is faster and more responsive than Director and includes transitions and special effects beyond the capabilities of Director). But Stephen had faith in the importance of this project, pushing us to our limits, and setting the example by continually volunteered to do jobs he’d never tried before in his life.

As work neared completion, several highly talented artists and musicians started showing up with donations of some great illustrations and music. And I can’t thank the Hempstead Company (1534 East Edinger #7, Santa Ana, CA, 92705, 1-800-284-4367) enough for their support, including many historical photographs and documents, illustrations and artwork from their catalogues, introductions to several donors of material, and even the occasional use of their office equipment and computers.

Thanks to Tom Bender, Chris Boucher, Derrick Hare of Velocity, the Hempman, the Hempstead Company, Hemp BC, Jack Herer, Holy Moly, Kentucky Hemp Growers Association, Amal Lana, Dave Martyn, Michael M, Phil Moran, Elvy Musikka, Orange Coast College Hemp Club, Orange County Hemp Council, Chris Peltier, Stephen Saunders, Jeremy Stout, Ivy Tomashoff, John Toner, Total Devastation, Bill Turner, Lee Wilson, Ian Worth, and others for making this disk possible.

On this disk you will find the materials (text and pictures) to create reports, fliers, newsletters, and other published materials to help in the grass roots movement to re-legalize hemp.

In future editions of this disk we would like to include more materials aimed at assisting grass roots organizations, so if you have photographs or illustrations, or even completed fliers and HTML web pages, please contact Milo.

And if you would like to help out by volunteering your time to the movement, please contact Jack Herer at HEMP, 5632 Van Nuys Blvd, Suite 310, Van Nuys, CA 91401 (or 310-392-1806).
